morning routines… even for the not so morning person

Who else is familiar with the morning dance with their alarm clock? Beep, snooze, beep and snooze…

I haven’t always been a morning person, but I think that creating a morning routine has helped me re-evaluate the way I look at mornings. I use to get up and rush to get myself and everything I needed for the day. I hated it. I didn’t like always feeling a step behind. I also noticed that how I started my morning impacted the pace of the rest of my day. I was ready to make a change. I wanted to be excited to wake up every morning. I wanted to have ME TIME. Now every person has different goals for what they need to get accomplished in the morning. These are what I found have worked for me, and my lifestyle; so I wanted to share! 

1. Figure out your R.E.M. cycle (There’s and APP for that). This has been a game changer for me. I now know how much sleep I need to feel rejuvenated. It isn’t even HOW MUCH SLEEP I get. It is the PATTERN OF MY SLEEP. I totally started using this when I was traveling with my student group to the east coast. Late nights and early mornings of sightseeing can be tough. But, with using a sleep calculator I was able to get the right pace of sleep. You can read an article here about best rated sleep APPs.

 

2. Down a glass of water as soon as you wake up. Sounds silly. But having water has become a morning ritual. It helps if I am hungry and really resets the digestive track. I also try to get a cute water bottle to make getting my daily H2O that more enjoyable throughout the rest of the day. My favorite is the bkr water bottle. 


3. Take some quite time. For me that is a morning meditation and yoga follow by a warm cup of tea. I try to skip coffee as much as possible. Coffee, for me, is a weekend treat. My favorite yoga guru is here.


4. Eat breakfast. This is so important. Breakfast is such an important meal. I don’t typically feel hungry right away but it fuels my day for success. I like to keep it simple with yogurt and granola, these days. 


5. Get everything you need for the next  day ready the night before. This goes for my clothes, breakfast, lunch, water and anything else I need for the next day. Not having to pack a lunch and being able to get out the door smoothly is critical to getting me on the road faster and beating that morning traffic. 


I’m no professional, of course. I’m a normal human trying to figure this thing called life out. But, I do think I have mastered some life hacks that even the not so not so morning person can benefit from.

Astrology: Sun and Moon Signs

As I have been more involved with self-help and growing spiritually I have been drawn to knowing more about what astrological alignment was like during my time of birth. Given the alignment impacts me today, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to do a little research to what the sun and moon position mean to my personal path. Most of us know our sun position, and know about our sun sign. I found some valuable information from reading about my sun sign. What I did not know much about, was my moon sign. I was intrigued to find out about the moon and how it’s position also has influences on who we are. Knowing how the sun and moon was positioned during our birth helps to create more of a personal understanding of our strengths and weaknesses. Realizing our strengths and weaknesses can help us reach personal goals (whatever they may be).

What I learned about my sun sign Pisces:

She is compassionate and sentimental. She likes isolated occupations: administration, archives, history. Spirit of self-sacrifice.

Weaknesses: tendency to be led astray, lack of experience or inability to apply experience practically. Lethargy, over-sensitivity and emotionalism.

What I learned about my moon sign Cancer:

She is likeable and sociable. Very sensitive to environmental conditions and surroundings. She likes home, habits, comfort and her little world. Very caring and protective of loved ones.

Weaknesses: subject to indolence, inertia. She is impressionable and too sensitive. Family problems.

Summer Smoothies

I have been making smoothies like a mad woman this summer. I LOVE treating myself and my hubby with something that we enjoy and is good for us. I have found a perfect “base” to my smoothie and then I add whatever I’m in the mood for. Here are the things you are going to need to get your smoothie game on point. 

Base:

1 1/4 cup Water (filtered) and a handful of ice

1/2 cup Yogurt (Greek Gods in “honey” is bomb) 

1 scoop Whey Protein  (I buy the bulk from Sprouts)


Current Add-ins:

-Strawberry/ Banana: 7 strawberries and 1 1/2 banana (below)

-Peanut Butter/ Banana: 1 large scoop pb and 1 1/2 banana (below)

– Pineapple/ Banana/ Coconut: 1 cup pineapple, 1 1/2 banana, 2 spoons of coconut (below)

So, as you can see once you get the base then the magic is all yours! Be creative, have fun! With all these recipes it makes 2- one for me and one for the hubs. He loves all of them but the Peanut Butter/Banana is his fav (and I’d have to agree–it’s amazing).

Fitness 

For those of you that have been following my blog for awhile know that working out is part of my daily routine. My typical day consists of me getting up around 5:50 am and hitting the mat. HIIT is my preferred morning workout routine. I have really been enjoying the Tone It Up You Tube workouts.  Typically my workouts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday’s are more cardio focused (HIIT). On Tuesdays and Thursday’s I mix in toning specific areas. 

Every evening for the past 3 months my husband and I have been loving finishing our evening with yoga. For years I have enjoyed practicing yoga but never before at this level. Having a daily practice has been such a game changer. I have seen improvements in my workout performance, tennis practice, mental clarity, and my sleeping routine. Yoga reminds to slow down, take a deep breath and enjoy every glorious moment. If you are in search of a great teacher I strongly suggest Yoga With Adriene on You Tube. Having a home practice is ideal because you choose your own hours, and it’s free. 

Now to make any workout feel successful I want to feel good while looking good. I rounded up a typical outfit I would wear for HIIT or Yoga.

I always carry around things to keep my hair, skin, and body feeling fresh. So, a travel deodorant, dry shampoo, and face spray is always in my workout bag. And to protect my eyes when I workout outdoors sunnies with good protection are a must!

Green Smoothie

  I remember the first time a saw a green smoothie I thought what the heck is that? I was instantly interested to check it out. Would I love it or would I hate it? I read the ingredients and saw apples and bananas at the top of the list so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try.  From that moment on I was hooked . I love trying different smoothies. So when we got a Nutribullet I was so excited to make my own organic blends of smoothies. Jeff and I have really been enjoying have our greens on a daily basis with no preservatives. 

I absolutely love to have one after my morning work out. I found that if I make them the night before it doesn’t cut into my morning routine. It’s a perfect way to start the morning.

  

The recipe:1/2 cup of water

2 cups of organic spinach 

One small Apple (prefer Granny Smith)

1/2 banana

1/3 cup frozen pineapple

Squeeze of local honey 

I blend and place in the refrigerator

Workout Basics 

Fitness is so important to me. I am someone who feels so much better when I get up early and workout. Personally, working out from home works perfect for my schedule. It cuts down on travel time and a gym membership fee. And, best thing about no gym membership is that I can use that money for new workout gear! Because I workout from home I feel great in easy two piece outfits.  I love kickboxing and yoga. My go to kickboxing is Jillian Michales, and for yoga I love the Tone it Up girls. I also like the HIIT from their channel. They are all available on You Tube. Plus, you can but their workouts in disk or direct download.

Style Whiplash… Pony Tail with a POP

My newest workout favorite– ouchless hair ties! What I love about them is that they are gentile on my hair, and they don’t leave creases. I was finding that regular hair ties were not very gentile on my hair and I was suffering from a lot of breakage. I have really been trying to get my hair back on the mend after my bleach-dye-bleach obsession, and with my shorter cut it is doing a lot better. I put my hair up daily, so I wanted to give these ouchless ties a try. I absolutely love the different varieties you can get. It has put a whole new fun spin on my pony tail. Every lady should have a set of these fun ties in their life!
